Northwest Airlines Flight 188<\/strong><\/p>\n

What a strange story this has become, since all of the early speculation proved incorrect.\u00a0 The pilots were not discussing or napping, rather distracted by personal laptop use (which violated company policy).\u00a0 The NTSB has published their initial findings<\/a>.\u00a0 The Wall Street Journal has\u00a0step-by-step\u00a0recap<\/a>.\u00a0 Everybody is putting their thoughts out there, including The Cranky Flier<\/a> and Jetwhine<\/a> blogs.\u00a0 There have been jokes and the happy ending to ease people’s minds.<\/p>\n

But, two things come to mind for me as to why this is terribly problematic.\u00a0 As Matt Ziemkiewicz\u00a0asked in the comments of the previous post, what if fighter jets had been deployed?\u00a0 With no communication ability, the hijacking assumption was a feasible one.\u00a0 I still don’t have complete understanding of why they weren’t deployed\u00a0(which is a separate issue), but what if?\u00a0 Secondly, I assume the company policy against this is in part due to the level of distraction\u00a0understood to be\u00a0likely\u00a0with personal technology devices.\u00a0 I think of\u00a0 last year’s Los Angeles train crash with the texting engineer<\/a> (via Reuters).\u00a0\u00a0I feel the pilots\u00a0and passengers were quite fortunate.\u00a0 But, I hope the pilots are held accountable for their poor judgement.<\/p>\n

Airbags\u00a0and Crash Survivability<\/strong><\/p>\n

About the time the balloon (sans boy) was landing, I was on the FoxNews website looking for more information on that saga, but happened upon a\u00a0good story and video\u00a0on the AmSafe\u00a0test facility.\u00a0 I can’t find the video again, but the related blog post is here<\/a>.\u00a0 NPR’s story, which aired yesterday, examines the new FAA standard taking effect this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It requires protection of\u00a016 times (up from 9 times) the force of gravity\u00a0and AmSafe is\u00a0offering airbags in seat belts as one\u00a0way\u00a0to achieve that.\u00a0 It is all very interesting.\u00a0 Good to see the standard improving.<\/p>\n

Charter Airline Safety<\/strong><\/p>\n

Eric R. Byer on the NATA, Inside Washington Blog, has\u00a0a critical response to the DOT Inspector General’s report entitled “On-Demand Carriers Have Less Stringent Safety Requirements Than Commercial Carriers.”<\/a> Interesting comments on what, from their persepective,\u00a0could be helpful on the FAA rule-making process.\u00a0 But in Washington, is it really ever likely that we can do away with the politics?\u00a0 I\u00a0tend to view the reactionary rhetoric as part of the process, since most accidents, incidents or reports result\u00a0in a period of that (typically before all the facts have been flushed out).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
