This week, I had the opportunity to attend\u00a0a screening in the\u00a0GE Aviation Lecture series at the National Air and Space Museum.\u00a0 Miles O’Brien and Patty Wagstaff were presenting a film they made about ongoing\u00a0pilot training at the Kenyan Wildlife Service<\/a>.\u00a0 It was fascinating on\u00a0many levels – the pilots, the wildlife, the poaching, the flying and training in rugged circumstances.\u00a0 It was a packed house, including GE vice president of Washington operations, Sean O’Keefe.\u00a0 I would have liked to\u00a0have met\u00a0Miles O’Brien, but it wasn’t to be that night.\u00a0 His next project is with Frontline, a special on Continental Connection Flight 3407, including coverage of the subsequent legislative action.<\/p>\n

Tough Economic Times<\/strong><\/p>\n

The recession has obviously taken it toll on the American public’s ability to use air travel the way they have in the past.\u00a0 Airlines are seeing fewer passengers, cutting flights and operational expense wherever they can and are attempting to offset losses by charging for “extras.”<\/p>\n

Last week, The New York Times ran a story on the toll\u00a0the cuts\u00a0have taken\u00a0on\u00a0one pilot and his family<\/a>.\u00a0 There was\u00a0a letter to the editor following<\/a>.\u00a0 Michael Moore has also taken up the topic in his new film and on his blog<\/a>.\u00a0 And so too, it\u00a0became\u00a0a topic of\u00a0discussion among our members this week.\u00a0 Let us all realize that this is a specialized skill set that is expensive and time-consuming\u00a0to attain.\u00a0 And, we\u00a0entrust\u00a0pilots with our lives.\u00a0 Over at Jetwhine, there is a post this week asking “Who Will Fly for America Tomorrow?”<\/a> Good question!<\/p>\n

Landing Issues<\/strong><\/p>\n

Okay, that heading may be an understatement.\u00a0 Monday, a Delta flight mistakenly landed on a taxiway instead of the designated runway at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.\u00a0 And, yesterday, a Northwest\u00a0flight passed right by\u00a0its Minneapolis destination.<\/p>\n

The FAA is investigating what could have been a very dangerous situation in Atlanta <\/a>(via wbstv.com).\u00a0 On the Northwest flight, the pilots\u00a0claimed to have been discussing or arguing about airline policy<\/a> (via NPR News and AP).\u00a0 Although it has since\u00a0been suggested that they may have been napping.\u00a0 Since they did not have contact with controllers for over an hour, there was some initial concern that it could have been a hijack situation.\u00a0Pending further investigation by the NTSB, the pilots have been suspended.<\/p>\n

Briefly:<\/em><\/p>\n

118 House members have signed a letter to President Obama encouraging the removal of user fees as a revenue source in the FAA Reauthorization Act.\u00a0 The letter can be found here<\/a> (via AOPA).\u00a0 Business interests favor retaining the existing fuel tax structure, as\u00a0it requires less administration.<\/p>\n
