{"id":857,"date":"2009-10-20T14:37:41","date_gmt":"2009-10-20T19:37:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/planesafe.org\/?p=857"},"modified":"2016-01-02T16:13:01","modified_gmt":"2016-01-02T21:13:01","slug":"outsourcing-maintenance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/planesafe.org\/?p=857","title":{"rendered":"Outsourcing Maintenance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Business of Airline Repairs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"The Business of Airline Repairs\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=113945453\" target=\"_self\">NPR News is running a wonderfully informative special series this week on the outsourcing of airplane maintenance<\/a>.\u00a0 With the U.S. airline industry\u00a0struggling financially in the\u00a0post-9\/11\/01 world, this has been a trend for some time.\u00a0 NADA\/F has been an outspoken opponent of outsourcing this crucial work.\u00a0 But this series calls attention to\u00a0a newer shift.\u00a0 Not\u00a0only is maintenance going outside the airlines, but more recently, outside the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>FAA inspects and approves these facilities, but\u00a0<a title=\"Interactive Map\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=113864153\" target=\"_self\">FAA does not require airlines to report exactly which of these repair stations they actually use<\/a> (via NPR).\u00a0 So the stories focus a bit on federal oversight, which is of concern.\u00a0 But I hope it goes without saying that the airlines themselves have a more difficult time monitoring the work done to their equipment when the work isn&#8217;t done in their proximity.\u00a0 Their oversight is\u00a0just as, if not more, important.\u00a0 Today&#8217;s\u00a0segment identifies some\u00a0mistakes with US Airways\u00a0planes repaired in El Salvador.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the\u00a0volume of comments I&#8217;ve seen so far on the NPR website and on Facebook, I understand that this is\u00a0resonating with\u00a0listeners and readers.\u00a0 But, I suggest taking further action if this bothers you.\u00a0 Contact your representation in Congress.\u00a0 Think\u00a0twice about which airlines you support with\u00a0ticket (or stock) purchase.\u00a0 The public and airline employees can make their dissatisfaction known.\u00a0 Safety\u00a0should not be compromised.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>UPDATE!\u00a0 <a title=\"AA Insourcing\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=113971588\" target=\"_self\">Part three of the series has aired on All Things Considered<\/a>.\u00a0 I was happy they could end\u00a0on a positive note and the example of\u00a0American Airlines.\u00a0 The airline is establishing a new model for managment\/labor relations and centralizing maintenance and repairs in Tulsa, Oklahoma.\u00a0 They believe it can be cost-effective, but they are asking that international facilities be subject to the same FAA scrutiny that they are.\u00a0 Sounds good, <a title=\"AA.com\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aa.com\/homePage.do\" target=\"_self\">AA<\/a>!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Business of Airline Repairs NPR News is running a wonderfully informative special series this week on the outsourcing of airplane maintenance.\u00a0 With the U.S. airline industry\u00a0struggling financially in the\u00a0post-9\/11\/01 world, this has been a trend for some time.\u00a0 NADA\/F has been an outspoken opponent of outsourcing this crucial work.\u00a0 But this series calls attention [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[24],"class_list":["post-857","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog","tag-oversight"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
