Flight 3407 Families to DOT Nominee Foxx: “Safety Must Be Top Priority”<\/p>\n

The ‘Families of Continental Flight 3407’\u00a0issued the following statement in response\u00a0to President Obama’s nomination of Anthony Foxx to be the next Transportation Secretary:<\/p>\n
“As numerous entities weigh in on Mayor Foxx’s nomination in terms of\u00a0the ability of his cabinet seat to\u00a0influence jobs and the economy in the transportation sector, our group serves as a reminder that economic-driven shortcuts employed by some regional airlines can have disastrous consequences.\u00a0 While we are all for promoting the economy, we\u00a0learned\u00a0the hard way\u00a0what\u00a0can happen\u00a0when\u00a0the airlines\u00a0are allowed to\u00a0run\u00a0roughshod over the FAA,\u00a0owing to\u00a0a\u00a0laissez-faire approach to the industry by the White House in the years leading up to February 12, 2009.<\/p>\n
“Looking back on the last four years since this needless tragedy, we applaud Secretary LaHood’s continued\u00a0prioritization of\u00a0safety across all modes of transportation,\u00a0in particular his\u00a0success in steering through\u00a0landmark new flight and duty time guidelines which will greatly improve the plight of regional airline pilots.\u00a0 The next six months are a critical period\u00a0for DOT and FAA in terms of achieving full implementation of\u00a0the 2010 Airline Safety Act, and this transition at the top of the Department of Transportation\u00a0cannot be\u00a0allowed to cause any further delay\u00a0to\u00a0key rulemakings on pilot qualifications and\u00a0crewmember training. \u00a0 “We look forward to following Mayor Foxx’s Senate confirmation process closely, and learning more about his positions on key\u00a0transportation safety issues.”<\/p>\n
