I haven’t done a news summary in\u00a0over a week, since I was out of town and internet-disabled for several of those days!\u00a0 Since there is a lot to mention, I am going to really limit it to the last few days. . .<\/p>\n

Accidents<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sadly, last Sunday, four people were killed in a plane crash in Palm Beach County, Florida<\/a> (via The Miami Herald). \u00a0The NTSB is investigating, but early reports say there may have been a fire on board.<\/p>\n

Today, two French fighter jets crashed during a test flight in the Mediterrenean.\u00a0 Early reports say that one pilot was rescued and one is missing <\/a>(via Reuters).<\/p>\n

Airspeed Sensors<\/strong><\/p>\n

Back in early September, the FAA ordered Thales airspeed sensors be replaced on\u00a0over forty\u00a0planes based on that being a possible\u00a0factor\u00a0in the crash of Air France 447<\/a> (via\u00a0The New York Times).\u00a0 But now, the European Aviation Safety Agency has issued a warning regarding the replacement, Goodrich Corp., valves<\/a> (via the Philadelphia Inquirer).\u00a0 They are encouraging airlines to check these sensors too.<\/p>\n

Emissions<\/strong><\/p>\n

In advance of the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen in December, the U.S. aviation industry is contemplating changes that may\u00a0mitigate the impact of\u00a0any future regulation and or taxes that result from the international negotiations<\/a> (via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram).\u00a0 The E.U. is already in the process of implementing\u00a0a fee structure for greenhouse gas emissions\u00a0from airplanes.\u00a0 An industry group, of primarily international\u00a0players,\u00a0announced this week\u00a0a goal of a 50% reduction in net carbon emissions by 2050<\/a> (via\u00a0Just the Flight).<\/p>\n

Briefly:<\/em><\/p>\n

A new aircraft surveillance system,\u00a0with Wide Area Multilateration technology, is being used to more closely monitor air traffic in mountain airports<\/a> (via the Denver Post).<\/p>\n

FedEx\u00a0welcomed its first Boeing 777 freighter this week\u00a0<\/a>(via Memphis Commercial Appeal).<\/p>\n

Yesterday, the House passed a short term funding measure for the FAA.\u00a0 The Senate must also act <\/a>(via the AP).<\/p>\n

The Christian Science Monitor has a nice summary of\u00a0yesterday’s Aviation Subcommittee hearing<\/a>.<\/p>\n
