There is a bit to mention from last week and for the start of this week.<\/p>\n

In last Sunday’s Washington Post, I saw a good question and answer in the Travel Section<\/a>.\u00a0 The question was\u00a0about safely flying with a toddler and the answer included this\u00a0 FAA link<\/a>, which is quite helpful and I like to see it mentioned.<\/p>\n

Thankfully, the hijacking of AeroMexico\u00a0Flight 576\u00a0last Wednesday was over rather quickly<\/a>(via CNN). \u00a0The Bolivian man\u00a0responsible has been charged <\/a>(via the AP).\u00a0 He\u00a0is said to have a history of drug addiction and claimed to have acted from a divine revelation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fatigue<\/strong>
\nThe Wall Street Journal reports that portions of the airline industry, including the Air Line Pilots Association, have been involved in the FAA review of pilot fatigue<\/a>. The suggestions will be presented in a Notice of Proposed Rule Making, to be published before the end of the year <\/a>(via ALPA).<\/p>\n

Motivated by the initial findings of the Flight 3407 crash investigation, the fatigue rules will likely aim to eliminate ambiguity about fitness on the job.\u00a0 But, as I read the articles in the Buffalo News, I can’t help but notice that these are corporate culture issues more than anything else.\u00a0 While new rules should help, there needs to be more internal airline\u00a0policy and practice review if they truly care about some of the things brought to light in this case. You can see the article about pressures Colgan pilots (the subcontractor for Continental Express) felt they were under<\/a> (via Buffalo News).\u00a0 And, the Continental pilots’ views as well<\/a> (via Buffalo News).<\/p>\n

Family Assistance Workshop<\/strong>
\nThis week, the American Association of Airport Executives<\/a> is hosting a two-day Family Assistance Workshop\u00a0at the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority training facility in Washington DC.\u00a0 NADA\/F’s own Gail Dunham and Matt Ziemkiewicz will be participating, along with some of our\u00a0other members, in\u00a0one of the\u00a0panel discussions.\u00a0 The program is to help airports develop their NTSB mandated plan to deal with catastrophic events, which includes dealing with\u00a0victim’s families.\u00a0 I am confident that\u00a0our experience and insight\u00a0will prove valuable to the workshop participants.<\/p>\n
