{"id":593,"date":"2009-08-28T14:30:50","date_gmt":"2009-08-28T19:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/planesafe.org\/?p=593"},"modified":"2016-01-02T16:13:22","modified_gmt":"2016-01-02T21:13:22","slug":"593","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/planesafe.org\/?p=593","title":{"rendered":"From The Last Few Days: Aug 24"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Well, it is Friday again and I haven\u2019t had\u00a0as much time as I would have liked to write about this week&#8217;s\u00a0news items. \u00a0In the future, I will try not to go as many days between posts.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"NTSB recommends\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ntsb.gov\/Pressrel\/2009\/090827b.html\" target=\"_blank\">The NTSB has issued five safety recommendations to the FAA<\/a>, in response to the midair collision between a helicopter and small plane over the Hudson River on August 8, 2009. <a title=\"AP NTSB recommends\" href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/hostednews\/ap\/article\/ALeqM5gCJN2Wyd01AZIxooIYmr3QOOzBAAD9ABIKLG0\" target=\"_blank\">The AP has a nice summary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA has been investigating Southwest Airlines for improper use of parts, which resulted in some\u00a0flights being grounded last weekend. <a title=\"FAA Southwest\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/apps\/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=ap_GfYqwo8Bc\" target=\"_blank\">Although, it appears to more of a compliance issue than a safety risk (via Bloomberg).<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Black boxes\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/08\/29\/world\/africa\/29plane.html?_r=1\" target=\"_blank\">The flight data recorders have been recovered from Yemenia Aiways Flight 626, which crashed near Comoros on June 30, 2009 (via The New York Times).<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Tarmac delay\" href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/ap_travel\/20090826\/ap_tr_ge\/us_travel_flight_plan_tarmac_delays\" target=\"_blank\">The AP story about &#8220;surviving&#8221; time on a delayed plane <\/a>was one of the most popular on Yahoo! News yesterday. Of course, everyone\u2019s awareness was elevated when the passengers, from Continental Express Flight 2816, were held on the plane in Rochester, Minnesota earlier this month. I was glad to see the author began by mentioning that this case was an unusual circumstance, since the title played to people&#8217;s fears. I like to think that the subsequent weeks of investigation and discussion (to put it nicely) will result in lessons learned. <a title=\"Blame swirls\" href=\"http:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/travel\/flights\/2009-08-23-stranded-flight-continental-express_N.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Even if ExpressJet, Continental Airlines, Rochester Airport, Mesaba Airlines and Secretary LaHood don\u2019t necessarily agree\u00a0who was most at fault\u00a0(via USA Today)<\/a>.\u00a0As for this article, it is good information, since regular delays are not infrequent at all.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"CF on Rochester\" href=\"http:\/\/crankyflier.com\/2009\/08\/24\/continentals-overnight-excursion-in-rochester-minnesota\/\" target=\"_blank\">This week, The Cranky Flier posted his assessment of Flight 2816 too<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also, briefly:<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Small plane\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/08\/26\/nyregion\/26plane.html\" target=\"_blank\">A small plane made an emergency landing in a mall parking lot\u00a0in New Jersey on Tuesday (via The New York Times).<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Japan Times\" href=\"http:\/\/search.japantimes.co.jp\/cgi-bin\/nn20090828b4.html\" target=\"_blank\">ANA Flight 584 made an emergency landing in Tokyo, Thursday morning. The Boeing 767 suffered a loss in cabin pressure, but oxygen masks deployed and nobody was injured (via Japan Times).<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This weekend, College Park Airport in Maryland will be celebrating 100 years of flight with an event called <a title=\"AirFair100\" href=\"http:\/\/www.collegeparkaviationmuseum.com\/Events\/AirFair_100_.htm\" target=\"_blank\">AirFair100!<\/a> Looks fun!
