{"id":558,"date":"2009-08-21T13:48:17","date_gmt":"2009-08-21T18:48:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/planesafe.org\/?p=558"},"modified":"2016-01-02T16:13:22","modified_gmt":"2016-01-02T21:13:22","slug":"558","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/planesafe.org\/?p=558","title":{"rendered":"Pan Am Flight 103"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This is a tough way to start the blog.\u00a0 When I committed to write about aviation issues for NADA\/F, I was aware that there would be weeks like this.\u00a0 Like others close to aviation disasters, I am familiar with years-long grief and frustration.\u00a0 Of course, NADA\/F&#8217;s work in the areas of safety, security, survivability and support allow positive outcomes, even if it takes time.<\/p>\n<p>But today, the day after convicted terrorist, Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi, was released from his life sentence on &#8216;compassionate grounds,&#8217; I feel sickened and discouraged.\u00a0 Our thoughts are with the friends and family members of the victims of Pan Am 103.\u00a0 Regardless of his health status, he was convicted of murder on 270 counts and his release is a miscarriage of justice.\u00a0 He ended up serving just days for every life he took.\u00a0 Much as been written about this in the last couple of days, so there isn&#8217;t much more for me to say than that.<\/p>\n<p>I appreciate CNN&#8217;s coverage of this, including the <a title=\"Blitzer Interview with Macaskill\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2009\/WORLD\/europe\/08\/20\/transcript.lockerbie.bomber\/index.html?section=cnn_latest\" target=\"_blank\">Wolf Blitzer interview<\/a> and some posts on the <a title=\"Don't Dishonor Lockerbie Victims\" href=\"http:\/\/ac360.blogs.cnn.com\/2009\/08\/20\/flynn-dont-dishonor-lockerbie-victims\/\" target=\"_blank\">AC360 blog<\/a>.\u00a0 I encourage you to visit the <a title=\"Victims of Pan Am Flight 103\" href=\"http:\/\/www.victimsofpanamflight103.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">victims of Pan Am 103<\/a> website to learn more.<\/p>\n<p>I received word yesterday from Bob Monetti, whose son Rick was on the flight, that the families will be in New York City in September when Libyan leader, Muammar Gaddafi, arrives for the opening session of the U.N General Assembly.\u00a0 He wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>We are planning to give him a welcome worthy of the murderer of our loved ones.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a tough way to start the blog.\u00a0 When I committed to write about aviation issues for NADA\/F, I was aware that there would be weeks like this.\u00a0 Like others close to aviation disasters, I am familiar with years-long grief and frustration.\u00a0 Of course, NADA\/F&#8217;s work in the areas of safety, security, survivability and [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[3315,3316],"class_list":["post-558","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blog","tag-pa103","tag-terrorism"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.4 -
